NDIS and psychology

The NDIS offers funding for individuals diagnosed with psychosocial disabilities. However, for conditions other than those classified as psychosocial, psychology services can still be accessed to enhance daily living skills. For instance, someone diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder might require psychology support in their NDIS plan to aid them in developing social skills or accessing behavioral management techniques. Psychology services are funded by the NDIS under the “Improved Daily Living Skills” support category, which falls under the Capacity Building section of an NDIS plan. To be eligible for psychology services, this support category must be included in your plan, and the services provided should align with the goals set out in your plan. If you manage your NDIS plan independently, you have the flexibility to choose any psychologist you prefer; it doesn’t have to be through an approved provider. However, if your plan is NDIS-managed by a registered provider like Your Side, you’ll need to access psychology services through them.

In some cases, it may be necessary to see a psychologist for diagnosis before accessing the NDIS. While a formal psychological diagnosis isn’t always mandatory, it can significantly help if you are seeking NDIS funding for psychological or mental health-related reasons.
